Ann is 67. In May 2005, the day before she was due her mammogram, Ann discovered a lump. Following the mammogram Ann underwent a needle biopsy and it was following this biopsy that her surgeon had to break it to her that the lump was indeed cancerous, and a mastectomy would be needed. The operation was booked for 9 days later and in the interim Ann and husband went on holiday. Ann was very concerned about her husband being upset and was glad that the 9 days wait was occupied by their holidays.
The mastectomy was followed by good news. The cancer had not spread and Ann had undergone immediate reconstruction using the muscle from the back. Luckily she required no chemotherapy at all and is now on a 5 year team trial of Aromasin. In May 2006 Ann underwent another small procedure which reconstructed her nipple and also smoothed out some irregularities due to the re-siting of the muscle.
